Basketball rules - who needs to know?

The rules of basketball appear quite straightforward, bounce the ball to move, put it in the other team’s bucket. Who needs to know any more than that?

How many things are referees counting?

- 3 seconds in the paint

- 5 seconds to ‘do something’ under pressure’, or to inbound a dead ball

- 8 seconds to cross the half way line

- 14 seconds to shoot from an offensive rebound, or from possession in the front court

- 24 seconds to shoot the ball when gaining possession in the back court

Are there any more??    What about 30 secs?

Don’t know why you keep getting called for fouls? Do you understand the cylinder principle (page 37) or the meaning of an established legal guarding position (page 38)?

How do I read a scoresheet to see how many points I scored? What to those slashes, circles and dots mean (page 78)?

The rules of basketball are quite complex, referees are looking for lots of things at once, in a small, busy space with athletic players moving at speed. No wonder they recommend three are needed.

Understanding the rules makes you a better player, coach and supporter. The book is not an exciting read, but it’s good to refer to if your not sure about something.
